Your
waterdepartmentcan tell
you how hardyour water is. So
can your rural countyagent.Or
your area’swatersoftenercom-
pany.Just calland askthem how
many “grains” of hardnessisin
your water.
How much
detergentshould you
use?That depends.Isyour water
“hard” or “soft?” With hard
water,you needextradetergentto
getdishesclean.With soft water,
you needlessdetergent.
Too much detergentwith soft
water not onlywastesmoney,it
can be harmful. It cancausea
permanent cloudinessof glass-
ware, called“etching:’An outside
layerof glassis etchedaway! Of
course, this takes sometime. But
why take a chancewhenit’s easy
to find out the hardnessof your
water.
Keep
your detergent fresh and
dry.
Under the sinkisn’ta good
placeto store detergent.Too much
moisture. Don’t put detergentinto
the dispenseruntil you’reready to
wash dishes,either.(Rwon’t be
fresh OR dry.)
If your detergent gets old or
lumpy, throw it away.It won’t
wash well.Old detergentoften
won’t dissolve.
