DCIM
Digital Camera Images. The name of the root direc-
tory when storing images according to the Design
rule for Camera File system (DCF) standard.
DRM
Digital Rights Management; controlling copying
and distribution of contents, with respect to intel

DTMF
Dual Tone Multi Frequency. A method of coding
digits as a combination of two audible tones.
DUN
Dial-Up Networking.
ECML
Electronic Commerce Modelling Language.
e-GSM
Extended GSM. New frequencies specified by the
European Radio Communications Committee
(ERC) for GSM use when additional spectrum is
needed (Network-dependent). It allows operators
to transmit and receive just outside GSM's core
900MHz frequency band. This extension gives
increased network capability.
EMS
Enhanced Messaging Service. An extension of
SMS enabling pictures, animations, sound and text
formatting to be added to text messages. 3GPP
has included EMS in the standards for SMS.

Federal Communications Commission. US govern-
ment agency which regulates radio communica-
tions.

Full Rate, speech coding.
GIF
Graphics Interchange Format. Format for storing
images which also supports animated images.
Highly compressed by limiting the colour palette to
16 or 256 colours.
G-MIDI
General MIDI. Specifies a minimum level of per-
formance compatibility.
GPRS
General Packet Radio Services.
GSM
Global System for Mobile Communications. GSM
is the world's most widely-used digital mobile
phone system, now operating in over 160 countries
around the world.
GSM 900
The GSM system family includes GSM 900, GSM
1810 and GSM 1900. There are different phases of
roll-out for the GSM system and GSM phones are
either phase 1 or phase 2 compliant.
GSM 1810
Also known as DCS 1810 or PCN, this is a GSM
digital network working on a frequency of 1810
MHz. It is used in Europe and Asia-Pacific.
GSM 1900
Also known as PCS. Refers to a GSM system run-
ning in the 1900MHz band. Used in the USA and
Canada, for instance.
