since there are many modems using the service, it is even more
imperative to have a unique name for your modem.
Understanding DNS
TheRavenhastheabilitytoqueryDNSserversinorderto
translatedomainnamesintoIPaddresses.Thisallowsyouto
usedomainnamesinplaceofIPaddressesformostofthe
configurationoptionsrequiringIPaddresses.Thisisimportant
ifyourRa venwillneedtocontactanothermodem
orother
devicethathasadomainnamebutanunknownordynamicIP
address(suchasanotherremoteRavenusingIPManager).
Configuring DNS
Generally,whenyourRavenreceivesitsIPaddressfrom
Provideraspartoftheconnectionprocess,itwillalsoreceive
theDNSserverstouseforresolving(ortranslating)namesto
IPaddresseswhichitwillautomaticallyconfigureinthe
modemsettings.UnlessyourRavenwillbeusedonanetwork
withothermodemsordeviceswhichhavenamesinternalto
thelocalnetworkorfrequentlychangingIPaddresses,the
DNSserversprovidedbyProvidershouldbeallyouneed.
IftheRavenwillbecommunicatingwithadevicethathasa
domainnamebutchangesitsIPaddressfrequently(s uchas
anotherAirLinkmodemusingIPManager)orisonanetwork
wheredevicesareaccessedbynamesratherthanIPaddresses,
youwillwanttoputinanalterna te
DNS(*DNSUSER)where
thatdomainisupdated,suchastheIPManagerserverthe
remotemodemisusingorthelistingofIPaddressestonames
iskept.
IfyouneedtomanuallyconfigureDNS,inAceManager,select
DNS.
