Hearing Aid Compatibility (HAC) Rating
TheFCChascreatedaratingsystemforcellularphonesregardingtheirHAC-relatedperformance.
Thisratinghelpsconsumerswithhearingdisabilitiestofindphonesthatwillworkwellwiththeir
hearingaiddevices.TheHACratingandmeasurementprocedurearedescribedintheAmerican
NationalStandardsInstitute(ANSI)C63.19:2007.
ANSIC63.19containstworatingstandards:an“M”ratingfrom1to4forhearingaidsoperatingin
microphonemode,anda“T”ratingfrom1to4forhearingaidsoperatingintelecoilmode.
M-RatingstandsforMicrophoneratingandindicatestheamountofreductionofRFinterference
betweenthetelephoneandthehearingaidinacousticcouplingmode(alsocalledmicrophone
mode).
PhonesratedM3orM4meetFCCrequirementsandgeneratelessinterferencetohearingdevices
setinmicrophonemode.T-Ratingstandsfortelecoilratingandrepresentsinductivecouplingwith
hearingaidsthatareoperatingintelecoilmode.Atelecoilisasmallpieceoftightlywrappedwire
builtintosomehearingaids.Whilethemicrophoneofahearingaidpicksupallsounds,thetelecoil
willonlypickupanelectromagneticsignalfromthetelephone.Thus,usersoftelecoil-equipped
hearingaidsareabletocommunicateoverthetelephonewithouttheamplificationofunwanted
backgroundnoise.
