About Playlists
A playlist is a list of digital media les that play in a specied
order. Your playlists are available in the library, in the My
Playlists category (see previous gure). A temporary playlist,
called Now Playing, is available from the menu in the Now
Playing screen. It lists the currently playing le, as well as
any les that have been “queued up” to play next.
About DRM, licenses, and protected les
Some digital media les, such as songs downloaded from
online stores, are encrypted to prevent the les from being
unlawfully distributed or shared. Content providers use a
technology called Digital Rights Management (DRM), to en-
crypt the les. During the encryption process, the content
provider creates a license which species how and when
the le can be used.
For example, a content provider could create a license that
allows you to play a certain le on your computer, but not
on your Smartphone. Or, a license that allows you to play
a certain le on your Smartphone, but only for a month, or
perhaps only a certain number of times. Files that have
licenses associated with them are called protected les.
If you want to copy a protected le from your desktop com-
puter to your Smartphone, use the desktop Media Player to
synchronize the le to your Smartphone (instead of dragging
the le from a folder on your desktop computer to a folder
on your Smartphone or storage card). This will ensure that
the license is copied along with the protected le. In the
desktop version of Windows Media Player 10 or later, you
can use the Sync feature to automatically copy your audio
les, video les, and playlists to your Smartphone every
time you connect.
To see the protection status of a le, select it and then select
Properties from the menu.
