Thewirelesstelephoneindustryhasdeveloped
a rating system for wireless phones, to assist
hearingdeviceusersndphonesthatmaybe
compatiblewiththeirhearingdevices.Notall
phoneshavebeenrated.Phonesthatarerated
havetheratingontheirboxoralabellocated
on the box.
Theratingsarenotguarantees.Resultswill
varydependingontheuser’shearingdevice
andhearingloss.Ifyourhearingdevice
happenstobevulnerabletointerference,
you may not be able to use a rated phone
successfully. Trying out the phone with your
hearingdeviceisthebestwaytoevaluateitfor
your personal needs.

requirementsandarelikelytogenerateless
interferencetohearingdevicesthanphones
thatarenotlabeled.M4isthebetter/higher
of the two ratings.

Hearingdevicesmayalsoberated.Your
hearingdevicemanufacturerorhearinghealth

Higherratingsmeanthatthehearingdevice
isrelativelyimmunetointerferencenoise.
The hearing aid and wireless phone rating
valuesarethenaddedtogether.Asumof5is
considered acceptable for normal use. A sum of
6isconsideredforbestuse.
Intheaboveexample,ifahearingaidmeets
theM2levelratingandthewirelessphone
meetstheM3levelrating,thesumofthe
twovaluesequalM5.Thisissynonymousfor
Tratings.Thisshouldprovidethehearingaid
userwith“normalusage”whileusingtheir
hearing aid with the particular wireless phone.
“Normalusage”inthiscontextisdenedas
asignalqualitythatisacceptablefornormal
operation.
TheMmarkisintendedtobesynonymous
with the U mark. The T mark is intended to
besynonymouswiththeUTmark.TheMand
T marks are recommended by the Alliance
for Telecommunications Industries Solutions
(ATIS). The U and UT marks are referenced in
Section20.19oftheFCCRules.TheHACrating
and measurement procedure are described
in the American National Standards Institute
(ANSI)C63.19standard.
ToensurethattheHearingAidCompatibility
rating for your phone is maintained, secondary
transmitterssuchasBluetoothandWLAN
components must be disabled during a call.
