The periodic checking of devices by one management device or application to check the state of
each, usually to see whether they are still connected or want to communicate.
POP3

Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3)
The most recent version of a standard protocol for receiving e-mail. POP3 is a client/server
protocol in which e-mail is received and held for you by your Internet server.
PRI
See Primary Rate Interface (PRI).
Primary Rate Interface (PRI)
An ISDN interface that consists of 23 B-channels and one 64-Kbps D-channel in the United
States or 30 B-channels and 1 D-channel in Europe. Contrast with Basic Rate Interface (BRI).
probe
A device component that analyzes protocol flows.
raw ASCII report
The PATROL DashBoard data that is exported in an ASCII format for use in external
applications.
Real-Time mode
A view mode that displays the present values of device indicators. These metrics are continually
refreshed, typically every 10 seconds.
Remote Network Monitoring (RMON)
The RFC 1271 standard that defines a remote monitoring MIB that supplements MIB-II and
makes a major step forward in internetwork management.

Round Trip Time (RTT)
The time measured for a complete data exchange between a device managed by PATROL
DashBoard and any other device.
router
A device that interconnects networks and forwards packets from one network to another, based
on network layer information.
