Chapter 4 Discovering and Managing Objects 73
Using Generic Discovery
Generic discovery automatically discovers the various devices (routers, switches,
servers, probes, hubs, and generic devices) on your local network and their interfaces,
given an IP address plan that is specified by a generic IP address/mask pair. You can
filter the types of network objects to be discovered by checking or clearing the check
boxes in the screens.
During the search, a regular refresh takes place, displaying the discovered devices in
the navigation tree and the total number of devices found. After the search has been
successfully completed, the devices appear in the navigation tree with all their
components (for example, interfaces and DLCIs). The duration of this operation
depends on the traffic on the network and the latency time. It can be several minutes
long.
After you create a new generic discovery entry in the navigation tree, you must move
the devices of that discovery entry to the appropriate domain or to the
Network root
so that the objects can be polled. Devices are polled only when they are under the
Network root or under a domain.
