A public key is a key that people other than the certificate subject can use. BlackBerry smartphones use public
keys to encrypt email messages or PIN messages that users send to certificate subjects and to verify the
signature on email messages or PIN messages that users receive from certificate subjects.

A root certificate is a self-signed certificate and usually belongs to a certificate authority.
